There are four important questions to answer about my fresh milled flour journey, and I thought they each deserved their own feature- “Who am I?”, “Why am I doing this?“, “What does home milling look like?“, “What do I need to start my own home milling journey?”
(Click the links to see each individual answer!)
I am not a chef or a baker, I don’t sell my food, and most days you’re probably not even going to get an “aesthetic” social media view of my life. (I find them unrealistic and not supporting the idea that fresh milling is something that the average person can do at home!) My kitchen is not fancy, my children leave trails of crumbs and toys in their wake, and if you stopped by on a random Saturday you’d find me with a mom bun in my comfy clothes trying to do too many things at once, and potentially getting sidetracked and getting none of it done at all. Sound like you, too?
My name is Shaley, and I am a mom in my early 30s to two small children. “M” is almost 4, and “L” turns 1 next month. To add to the chaos, we recently rescued a rambunctious puppy, who M named “Pepper”. We are residents of Indiana, my husband is an electrician for a manufacturing business, and I work as a medical coder.
I would consider myself a “selectively crunchy” mom, so that makes me a pretty judgement free person. I’m caffeine addicted, sleep deprived, and some days it’s just mom survival mode. We’re all in this together! (If you’re curious about my ‘selective’ crunch, we are dye free, I mill my own flour and make 90% of my kids snacks, but I’m not above takeout nights.)
I have been fresh milling my own flour at home for 3 months now. I cannot claim to be an expert, but I know that there is a need for more people willing to share what they know, so here I am- you can learn right along with me! When I get a recipe where I like it I promise to share to add to the collective fresh milled flour knowledge.
